The Black Dahlia case refers to the unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short, a young American woman since known as "The Black Dahlia". The body of Elizabeth Ann Short was found excruciatingly mutilated, cut in half at pelvic level and emptied of blood in a wasteland in Los Angeles on January 15, 1947. 22-year-old Elizabeth Short had moved to Hollywood with the goal of becoming an actress. The nickname "Black Dahlia" given to the victim would come either from her abundant brown hair, or from a dahlia flower that she wore in her hair, or from the black clothes she wore to go out at night, this nickname being a nickname popularized by the Los Angeles Herald Examiner newspaper, owned by William Randolph Hearst. It also refers to the movie The Blue Dahlia, with Veronica Lake, released shortly before the murder and whose plot is based on the murder of a young girl and the search for her murderer. This crime has been the subject of much speculation and has inspired books as well as fiction and documentary films, video games, music titles, etc. Elizabeth Short was born in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, July 29, 1924. She is the daughter of Cleo Short, an entrepreneur with a miniature golf construction business, and Phoebe Mae.

At the age of 18, dreaming of a career in the cinema, she leaves for Vallejo, in California, to live with his father who works at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. The two then left for Los Angeles at the beginning of 1943. According to one testimony, she left her father, with whom she had a difficult relationship, to find a job as cashier in an army store in Camp Cooke ( now Vandenberg Air Force Base), near Lompoc, California. She then left for Santa Barbara, where she was arrested on September 23, 1943 for illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor; she is sent back to Medford by the miners' brigade. During the rest of the war years, she continued to interact with Lieutenant Gordon. He offers to marry her but is killed in India in a plane crash in November 1945. The following years, earning her living mainly as a waitress, she resides in various cities of Florida, with occasional returns to Massachusetts. In 1946, she returned to California, bound for Hollywood, with the aim of becoming an actress. She survives between pensions, hotels and roommates.

Lover of art, and of fine parties, George Hill Hodel had been linked to the photographer Man Ray who participated in his crazy parties. In his book, Steve Hodel questions the possible connection between the mutilations carried out on the corpses and the famous photos entitled Minotaur and Red Lips Cut Out of Man Ray. In 2014, in his book Who killed the Black Dahlia? The enigma finally solved, the French writer Stéphane Bourgoin takes up the thesis of the iconoclastic chronicler of Hollywood, John Gilmore (in) according to which this crime is the work of a serial killer nicknamed the “butcher of Cleveland”.
