Maharashtra (in Marathi: महाराष्ट्र (mahārāṣṭra)) is a state in western India created in 1960, on linguistic grounds. Its population was 112,372,972 in 2011, which ranks it as the second most populous state in India. Only eleven countries in the world have a larger population. Its capital is Bombay, the economic capital and the largest city in India. It is the state that receives the most foreign direct investment. It produces 32% of Indian exports. Maharashtra is home to several protected areas, some of which are tiger reserves. Of the 92 Indian national parks in 2004, five were located in this state and more specifically in the region of Vidarbha.
