Concerns about Peer Review and How to Handle Them . In this class, you will be asked to review one another’s writing as a regular, graded assignment. You will be provided with a series of questions to guide you as you read and respond to one another’s drafts. In this handout, we address some general concerns many students have about reviewing classmates’ work. If you have these concerns, you are not alone.

Do NOT use the Save button—DO use the Submit button. (Clicking Save will create a “draft” posting that is invisible to your peers and your instructor.) By the end of Session 2 you will need to submit your first draft of the first major writing project so it will be ready for classmates to read and review during Session 3. Be sure to resave all files in RTF format (instructions in the Resources area, in the Tips and Tricks folder) and to avoid all symbols in your file name (DO NOT USE #, &, *, %, @, etc.) If you have problems uploading that first draft, contact the Instructional Technology staff (contact info in the syllabus) or the learning center at your nearest campus right away for help.

If you can’t evaluate and apply theory to an activity or product—no matter what it is—then you are kidding yourself that you really know anything about that subject. Peer reviewing is where your command of the principles and processes (the theory) behind writing will show up. It is the most important practice you can apply to writing skill improvement. In other words–you may get great feedback from peers in the peer review to help you with your revisions. You will certainly learn a great deal about writing when you make an effort to constructively review someone else’s work.
